Stoke Seniors ( formerly Over Sixties Lunch Club)
A caring group of lay volunteers, organises a comprehensive programme of lunches and other events throughout the year, providing a venue for the elderly and those living alone to meet and catch up with each other.
A typical year’s programme of events pre-covis included some of the following. We are rebuilding the programme with teas and other events so far.
- a twice-a-month lunch club, with a choice of menu, for the elderly and those living alone, serving up to 60 individuals from across the parish, using local commercial establishments, such as Emma’s and the Church House Inn.
- an annual New Year’s luncheon in the Village Hall provided by professional caterers. In January 2020, the luncheon was attended by 62 people, with entertainment provided by a local string quartet, and children from the village school sharing their writings and music. It is a most popular annual event, enjoyed by both young and old.
- a soup & pancake lunch on Shrove Tuesday.
- an annual outing for a Cream Tea, which last year was held at the Osborne Hotel in Torquay overlooking Meadfoot beach on a perfect September afternoon.
The lunch club is much more than about lunches! It is also a forum for the group to provide informal pastoral care by telephone, by visits and other means. Although the events have been suspended at the present time, the network of care and concern for the over 60’s continues. Once the restrictions on social gatherings have been lifted, the lunches and other events will resume. If you would like to join the club, please make contact with one of the volunteers.
