Over 60s Lunch Club
An ‘outreach’ group of lay volunteers, organise a comprehensive programme of lunches and other events throughout the year, providing a venue for the elderly and those living alone to meet and catch up with each other.
A typical year’s programme of events includes:
- a twice-a-month lunch club, with a choice of menu, for the elderly and those living alone, serving up to 60 individuals from across the parish in most months, using local bistro and pubs – Emma’s on the last Tuesday of each month, and for 2020 The Church House Inn on the 2nd Thursday of each month.
- an annual Christmas Lunch in the Village Hall provided by professional caterers. This was attended last January by 62 people, with entertainment from a local string quartet, and by children from the village school, sharing their writings and music with the group. The children clearly enjoyed performing for and interacting with the older generation, who in their turn derived much pleasure from the presence of young people.
- a Soup & Pancake Lunch, on Shrove Tuesday, also in the Village Hall.
- an annual outing for a Cream Tea, last year at the Osborne Hotel in Torquay overlooking Meadfoot beach on a perfect September afternoon.
In addition to specific events the group provide informal pastoral care by telephone, by visits and other means. In the current crisis this is proving to be invaluable in supporting those in enforced isolation.
Lunches and events will continue throughout 2020 once restrictions on social meetings are lifted. If you would like to attend please phone either Jan S on 782475, Jan N on 782060 or Pat on 664558 for details
